Volleyball takes down Beavers in 5th set
St. Louis- Fontbonne's women's volleyball team overcame the Blackburn College Beavers on Saturday 3-2 (22-25, 25-11, 25-20, 16-25 and 15-11). Fontbonne increases their SLIAC record to 2-6 while Blackburn remains winless at 0-5.
Keeping the Griffins going through defensive efforts was senior Olivia Thurmond. Thurmond recorded 45 digs during the 5-set match. Also contributing was a sleu of block assists from five different Griffins totaling six blocks. Junior Abbie Bergtholdt recorded the only Griffin solo block.
On the attack, Bergtholdt and fellow junior Taryn Ballmann each amassed 19 kills to lead the Griffins to victory. Thurmond managed to squeeze in four serving aces to help the Griffins win the match.
Following their Blackburn win, the Griffins fell to SLIAC foe Westminster (23-25, 17-25 and 14-25). Westminster currently sits in the number four spot in the conference. Thurmond and senior Ana Hibbeler led the defensive drive while Ballmann, Bergtholdt and Hibbeler led the Griffins in scoring efforts.
Fontbonne takes to the bus tomorrow night, traveling to MacMurray College for a SLIAC matchup at 7:00pm.
