Women's tennis finishes third at SLIAC Tournament
Fontbonne women's tennis defeated Greenville 5-4 to finish third in the SLIAC Tournament, the highest finish in the history of the program.
Belleville, Ill. - In the final day of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Tournament, the Fontbonne University Griffins defeated Greenville College 5-4.
Greenville only brought five players to the final game of the year. To start the day, the teams competed in five singles matches and were tied 2-2 after Fontbonne's Mariana Rogers and Morgan Smith won at one and two singles. As the two teams gathered to watch the end of No. 4-singles between Fontbonnne's Nicole Moore and Greenville's Maddi Walsh. Moore needed just one more point to win the match, but Walsh stepped up to win the second match. Instead of a third-set tie-breaker to 10 points, the two had to play out a third sequence, which Walsh won to give Greenville a 3-2 edge after singles were over.
Since Greenville didn't bring a sixth player, Fontbonne automatically earned the third doubles victory and sixth singles victory by default, which means they needed just one doubles win to take the third place match.
Rogers and Hannah Edmundson teamed up to secure the victory for Fontbonne at No. 1-doubles. Leading 7-5 and with Rogers serving, the Griffins shutout the Panthers for the final point and fifth victory.
Fontbonne finishes the year with a 5-15 record. SLIAC postseason awards will be announced during the middle of next week.
