ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The No. 1 Fontbonne University women's soccer team tried to erase a two goal deficit against Westminster in the SLIAC Championship on Saturday but its hard-fought efforts fell short with the Blue Jays hanging on for the 2-1 win.
How It Happened
After the Griffins missed a couple of scoring chances early, the Blue Jays were awarded a corner kick in the 25th minute. On the kick, the ball got loose in the box and went off a Fontbonne player for an own goal giving the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead.
In the 36th minute, Krystal Kohenskey had a chance to score the equalizer but Megan Davidson came up with the save. Then with 45.0 seconds left, the Blue Jays got a free kick from 35 yards out.
Lauren Halamicek stepped into it with her shot going into the back of the net just over the outstretched arm of Mary Beers putting Westminster ahead 2-0 at the break.
In the second half, the Griffins offense came out with a sense of urgency. In the 54th minute, Caitlyn Smith dribbled the ball down the right side, crossed it into the box, and Kohenskey was there to bury her shot past Davidson trimming the deficit down to 2-1.
The Griffins offense continued its nonstop pressure having an 8-0 shot advantage over the next 28:00 minutes. Fontbonne had another chance to tie it in the 85th minute but Caroline Neal's shot was stopped once more by Davidson. Despite Fontbonne having a 14-1 second half shot advantage it was the Blue Jays going on for the win.
