Five Second Half Goals Give Griffins A 6-0 Win Over MacMurray

Jacksonville, Ill.—After a tough loss against Westminster the Fontbonne University women's soccer team bounced back with a 6-0 victory over MacMurray on Saturday afternoon.

The Griffins (8-9; 5-2 SLIAC), outshot the Highlanders 22-1 in the victory. Linsey Klein led the way with a two goal and one assist performance.

Jacey Pate added a goal and assist of her own, while Darby Schaefering, Emily Cardwell and Kayla Collie netted one goal each. In net, Makayla Hussong got the victory after coming up with one save.

It was all Fontbonne from the opening whistle. The team outshot the Highlanders 6-0 in the first 11 minutes and had a chance to take the lead at the 12th minute, however, Cardwell's shot went off the post.

The Griffins continued its offensive pressure but MacMurrray's net-minder, Marissa Carpenter, came up with three straight saves in three minutes on Schaefering, Ellen Weaver and Pate to keep the visitor's off the board.

Then, in the 41st minute, Fontbonne was able to get one past Carpenter with Schaefering scoring an unassisted goal, her first on the year to give them a 1-0 lead at the break.

In the second half, the game broke wide open in the first three minutes. At 46:43, Cardwell found the back of the net off an assist from Klein to make it a 2-0 game. Just over 30.0 seconds later, Pate scored her sixth on the year to extend the lead out to 3-0.

Less than a minute later, the Griffins were awarded a corner kick. Pate's attempt found Klein and she buried her shot in to give FBU a 4-0 lead.

The Griffins weren't done there as they made it 5-0 in the 56th minute on Klein's second goal on the day. In the 64th minute, Collie netted her fifth on the season and third in the last two games to make it a 6-0 final.

The team returns home next Tuesday night on Senior Night in a key St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) showdown against Spalding. Kick-off is set for 8 p.m.
