Griffins Handed First Conference Loss Against Webster

ST. LOUIS, Mo.— In its first meeting since the 2016 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Championship game the clash between the Fontbonne University women's soccer team and Webster did not disappoint, however, it was the Gorloks escaping with the 1-0 win.

Fontbonne (4-8; 1-1 SLIAC), totaled 14 shots in the loss as Jacey Pate and Karlie Peth finished with three shots each. In goal, Makayla Hussong was handed the loss after coming up with six saves.

Webster (10-1; 2-0 SLIAC), got its lone goal off the foot of Lauren Nuelle, while Aly Miller improved to 4-0 as she made four saves.

In the first half, the Gorloks looked to take the lead early as the ball was crossed over to Joi Wilson who headed it on net, but Hussong came up with the diving save on the near post.

FBU had a couple of scoring chances in the 21st minute but shot attempts by both Meredith Wendt and Ellen Weaver were blocked by Webster's defense.

Then at the 33:36 mark, a loose ball found the foot of Nuelle and she blasted her shot from 30 yards out over the leaping Hussong to give them a 1-0 advantage.

Webster went on to outshoot the Griffins 3-1 the rest of the way, but FBU was still in it trailing by one at the half.

In the second frame, Webster totaled six shots in the opening nine minutes, however, Hussong kept it a 1-0 ball game as she came away with three saves.

FBU had three straight scoring chances of its own in the 67th minute but Pate's shot was blocked, Maddie Tague saw her shot go high and Wendt's shot was saved by Miller.

Later, Pate had a chance to tie the game up in the 85th minute but Miller stood tall with another save. Less than a minute later, Peth had a great chance for goal with a sliding shot just outside the 18. Miller though played spoiler and added another save.

That'd be the teams' final attempt as they ran out of time in its final push with Webster hanging on for the 1-0 victory.

The team will look to bounce back on the road on Saturday against Iowa Wesleyan. Kick-off is set for 3 p.m.
