Men's Wrestling Falls In Its Season Opener Against Iowa Wesleyan

MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa.—The Fontbonne University men's wrestling team hit the mat for the first time in 2021 and despite its efforts the Griffins fell 33-16 against Iowa Wesleyan.
How It Happened
After the Tigers grabbed the 6-0 lead, the Griffins got on the board at 133 pounds with Cody Castelline earning the fall win at the 8:49 mark to tie it up.
Iowa Wesleyan went on to win at 141, 149, 157, and 165 to lead 27-6. At 174 pounds, though it was Micah Dennis picking up a dominant 14-2 decision victory over Dominique Morris to put the deficit down to 27-10.
After Iowa Wesleyan won by forfeit at 184, the Griffins closed out on a high note with Sam Martin earning a hard fought 7-5 decision victory at 197 pounds. At 285, Joey Johnson stepped in and it was a battle against Brendon Lunsford but it was Johnson coming out on top with the 2-1 decision victory.

"It was great having the opportunity to get back on the mats tonight so first off I'd like to say thank you to my administration who have worked hard to give us the best opportunity to practice and compete. The guys had an opportunity to compete with someone other than each other and while some of our weaknesses were exposed, we had some first-year guys get their first taste of college wrestling and that's valuable experience."
He added, "I saw a lot of energy on the bench and some things that we did well especially out of our second-year guys. Now that we have a blueprint for things we can improve upon this year, I'm hopeful we will have an opportunity to correct our mistakes next week."
