ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Fontbonne University softball team won the SLIAC regular season title clinching the number one seed in the SLIAC Tournament. The Griffins improve to 19-18 on the season and 13-3 in conference play.
The Griffins took the title after a come-from-behind fashion victory over Spalding, 5-4, on Saturday during game one of the doubleheader.
Spalding put up a 4-0 lead in the first five innings. Makenzie Howell and Brenna Foley scored two runs in the bottom five. In the bottom of the sixth, Ashley Carrow and Karmen Daniels each scored one to tie the game 4-4. In the bottom of the eighth, a single from Ellie Bartlett scored Madelyn Holtmeyer to end up victorious. Hailey Kutz took the win in the circle. She pitched the complete game and struck out six while allowing eight hits and four runs, with only two earned ones.
In the beginning of game two, mother nature won and after the Griffins leading for 1-0 the game needed to stop due to lightning alerts. The game resumed on Sunday at the WashU field where Spalding took a 5-2 win over Fontbonne.

After clinching, the number one seed in the SLIAC tournament, The Griffins will play on Thursday at 4 p.m. EDT against the lowest seed from Quarterfinals at the host Spalding University.
