Softball Sweeps Past Principia, Thomas Tosses One Hitter In Game Two

ST. ANN, Mo.— The Fontbonne University softball team got back on the winning track Monday after an 8-2 and 10-0 (5 inn.) doubleheader sweep over Principia.

Game One

Score: Fontbonne 8, Principia 2

Location: St. Ann, Mo.

Records: Fontbonne 6-14 (4-2 SLIAC), Principia 3-13 (0-6 SLIAC)

How It Happened

After Principia took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third, the Griffins answered in the bottom half. Back-to-back singles from Diamond Thomas and Grace Harlin put the Griffins in business.

Emelia Modglin stepped in and hit a single to right, plating Thomas to make it a 2-1 game. Maddy Strickland reached on a fielder's choice to score Harlin.

After a fielder's choice and a single from Melanie Russo, Abby Richmond brought home Strickland and Becker on an RBI single to make it a 4-2 contest.

In the fourth, the offense didn't miss a beat. Harlin led off with a double and moved to third on Modglin's bunt single. Strickland went on to clear the bases with an RBI double to extend the advantage out to 6-2.

Strickland went on to score on a fielding error, while Lexi Becker touched home on Russo's double to left to give Fontbonne a commanding 8-2 lead.

That was more than enough for Strickland inside the circle as she sat down the last seven hitters she faced for her first win on the year.

Fontbonne Notables

• Strickland allowed two runs (one earned) and struck out a season-high seven. She also led in the RBI department with three.
• Harlin and Modglin combined to go 6-for-8 with three runs scored and an RBI at the No. 2 and No. 3 slots in the order.
• Russo contributed two hits and an RBI, while Emily McNiff added two hits as well.
• Richmond finished 2-for-2.

Principia Notables

• Leah Schaefer was dealt the loss allowing eight runs (six earned) on 15 hits.
• Hannah Hathaway and Schaefer had one hit and an RBI each.

Game Two (5 inn.)

Score: Fontbonne 10, Principia 0

Location: St. Ann, Mo.

Records: Fontbonne 6-14 (4-2 SLIAC), Principia 3-13 (0-6 SLIAC)

How It Happened

In the bottom of the first, Thomas led off with a double and she raced home on Modglin's single. The team pushed its lead out to 2-0 on Becker's RBI double.

In the third, the Griffins plated eight runs on six hits and were helped by three Panthers errors. Harlin, Modglin, Russo, McNiff and Thomas (two) all chipped in RBI to give Fontbonne a 10-0 lead.

That was more than enough for Thomas inside the circle as she allowed just one hit and sat down four en route to the mercy-rule win.

Fontbonne Notables

• Thomas picked up her third win the year. At the plate, she went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI.
• Modglin went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI.
• Harlin, Becker, Russo, and McNiff had a hit and RBI a piece.

Principia Notables

• Alyssa Hudenburg fell to 0-2 allowing 10 runs (four earned).
• Hannah Hathaway had the lone hit.
