Griffins Held Scoreless In Season Opener Against Maryville

Griffins Held Scoreless In Season Opener Against Maryville

ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The Fontbonne University softball team hit the diamond for the first time this year against Maryville and it was the Saints coming away with the 1-0 and 5-0 wins.

Game One

Final: Maryville 1, Fontbonne 0

Location: St. Louis, Mo.

Records: Maryville 8-4, Fontbonne 0-1

How It Happened

It was a pitcher's batter throughout with Griffins starter Diamond Thomas and Saints hurler Alyssa Callans each having control.

The Griffins threatened in the second with Thomas and Melanie Russo each hitting consecutive singles with one out. However, Callans retired the final two batters on strikeouts to end the threat.

It remained a scoreless game up until the home half of the fifth. Bri Livingston stepped in with one out and hit a solo shot to right field to break the tie. That'd be the lone run needed as the Saints went on for the victory.

Fontbonne Notables

  • Thomas took the tough loss as she went the distance, allowing the one run on eight hits.
  • Emelia Modglin, Thomas, and Russo had the hits for the Griffins.

Maryville Notables

  • Callans was the story for Maryville as she picked up her fourth win on the year and struck out 14 Griffins.
  • Jaclyn Pasakarnis led in the hits department with two.

Game Two

Final: Maryville 5, Fontbonne 0

Location: St. Louis, Mo.

Records: Maryville 9-4, Fontbonne 0-2

How It Happened

It was a pitcher's dual once again in game two, this time around between Fontbonne's Maddy Strickland and Maryville's Olivia Jarvis.

It was a scoreless contest up until the home half of the fourth. With two outs, Taylor Shingler got things started with a single. After stealing second, she came on home on Hannah Tolley's RBI single to make it a 1-0 game.

In the fifth, the Saints extended its lead out to 2-0 on back-to-back doubles from Pasakarnis and Callans. They went on to score three more times to push the advantage out to 5-0.

The Griffins tried to threaten in the sixth with two on, but Jarvis got out of the inning and went on to retire the side in the seventh for the win.
