Smith named to CoSIDA Academic All-District Team

The 2015-16 Academic All-District Softball teams were announced today as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The Academic All-District teams are divided into eight districts that recognize the NCAA Division I, Division II and Division III. In order to be selected to an Academic All-District team, a student-athlete must demonstrate success on the playing field and in the classroom, with academic and athletic achievements taken into consideration. The student-athlete must possess a minimum 3.30 GPA and be at least a sophomore in academic standing and is nominated by the school's Sports Information Director.

Fontbonne, representing NCAA Div. III District Five (AL, AR, FL, GA, MO, MS, NC, PR, SC, TN, VA) garnished the only St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference student-athlete. A Social Work major, senior catcher Emily Smith (St. Louis, Mo./Ritenor) earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors for the second time in her career, beating out four other catchers for the honor. The four-year Griffin has a 3.95 cumulative GPA and is set to graduate next week. Smith has been accepted into the Peace Corps and leaves in the fall for over two years of volunteer work.

Smith has earned SLIAC All-Conference honors each season and her senior teammates have been named regular-season SLIAC Champions each year as well. This season Smith had a 10-game hit streak between March 29 - April 15 and finished the regular season with a .371 batting average and .996 fielding percentage behind the plate.

She's made the Dean's List each semester and last year had six consecutive hits and was named to the NFCA Midwest All-Region Third Team.

CoSIDA Academic All-District award winners will be considered for the Academic All-America teams, voted on by the Academic All-America committee and CoSIDA Board of Directors.
