Two goals in thirty-three seconds lift Griffins over Spalding

St. Louis, Mo. - An exciting 45 seconds near the end of the first half was all it took for the Griffins to improve to 3-3 in conference play with their 2-1 victory over Spalding University today.

Fontbonne netted their first goal at the 39:59 mark when Corey Schmidt sent the ball into the middle of the box, looking for Alex Phillips. Phillips slid to maintain possession on intruding defenders as Alex Lamoreaux closed in to knock the ball into the right corner. The goal was Lamoreaux's fourth of the season.

Just 33 seconds later, Shay Garner lofted a pass diagonally to the top right of the box where Phillips and Spalding goalkeeper Logan Spencer both fought for possession. Phillips won on a sliding shot, and sent the ball to the left edge of the goal for his second score on the year.

Spalding wasn't about to let up when the Golden Eagles showed Griffin fans it can take as few as 12 seconds to score when Abdullahi Abdullahi sent Spalding's lone goal to the left corner at 40:44 to end scoring in the contest.

Fontbonne maintained possession early, playing small ball and achieving three shots on goal in the first 4:21 of play. Fans thought Fontbonne had scored early when Devin Arand connected on a Nathan Spiess corner kick. Arand's header was stopped short on a defensive save, the first of two unfortunate acts for the senior on the day. In total, Fontbonne held an 11-6 corner kick advantage, of which Arand had four shots and two taken away on defensive saves.

Alex Platipodis was strong defensively for Fontbonne. In at least seven instances, Platipodis was the last line of defense for the Griffins, eliminating Spalding's chances of a one vs. goalie situation in each scenario. Defender Alex Smith had two great defensive tackles with 1:37 remaining inthe game to keep Spalding at bay. Spalding had a last-chance play when they earned a free kick with 12 seconds left in the game but ultimately shot high.

Both teams were heated as each team's coach earned yellow cards. One Golden Eagle was given a penalty while Fontbonne players totaled four, including two on Ryan Curran.

Fontbonne returns to the pitch immediately as they host Finlandia University this Sunday, October 18th at 1pm.
