Griffins upset Webster in double overtime to head to SLIAC Championship

St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne University men's soccer entered the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament as the No. 4 seed. Thursday night the Griffins upset No. 1 seeded Webster University 1-0 in double overtime on their home turf. Fontbonne advances to the SLIAC Championship, hosted by defending champion Westminster College. The teams are set to start at 1pm on Saturday, November 8th in Fulton, Mo.

Senior Tim Menzel sent freshman Ryan Dudley a long pass up the field. A Gorlok defender edged the ball closer to the net. Dudley was the hero for the Griffins, shooting a screamer into the goal from the left side of the field about 20 yards out at 105:13.

Both teams played extremely hard, vying to keep their seasons alive, with 28 fouls and 3 yellow cards.

Fontbonne goalkeeper Joey Mirth saved four Webster shots, securing the win. Webster outshot Fontbonne 13-9 with both teams recording four shots on goal.

The 2014 SLIAC Tournament marks Fontbonne's 19th tournament appearance. The Griffins all-time tournament record is 15-13-2 and have four titles under their belt. The last time Fontbonne won the SLIAC Tournament was in 2006.

Westminster has a 4-14 SLIAC Tournament record, capturing their first Championship title last season.

The Champion will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
