Jacksonville, Ill. -A free kick ensued by a mass of players in front of the goal gave Fontbonne men's soccer their first goal of the season at the 60th minute last night against Illinois College.
Sophomore Alex Smith scored the game-winning goal to the lower right corner from senior Tim Menzel.
A foul-ridden game, Fontbonne totaled 20 fouls with Illinois College adding 15 of their own. Both teams got off nine shots, with Fontbonne only connecting three shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper Joey Mirth made all four saves in the win.
Two yellow cards were dispensed to Illinios College.
Fontbonne travels to Hendrix College in Conway Ark. this weekend. The Griffins play Hendrix at 2pm on Saturday and Rhodes College at noon on Sunday. Live stats links can be found on our schedule page for both games.
