How It Happened

WashU started off well in the home half of the first as they plated three runs on two hits. The team got a sacrifice-fly from John Brinkman, an RBI groundout from Caleb Durbin and an RBI single from Thomas Gardner to grab a 3-0 lead.

Fontbonne got one of those runs back in the second. Braeden Dobbs and Lance Chapman registered back-to-back singles. Two batters later, Dobbs came on home on Matt Tossick's RBI sacrifice-fly.

The team continued to trim away at the deficit in the third with Jackson Penrod reaching on a fielder's choice and that brought home Jonathan Hoevelmann, who reached base on a one out single.

In the top of the fifth, Hoevelmann led off with a single. Two batters later, he scored on a WashU fielding error to tie the game at 3-3. After a fly-out, Luke Summers came through with an RBI single of his own and Penrod came in to score to give them a 4-3 lead.

The Bears went on to retake the lead with a run in the sixth and seventh, but the Griffins answered right back.

In the eighth, with Tyler Grimes on third, Manuel Lora registered his first RBI with the Griffins on a single to score Grimes to once again tie the game. In the ninth, the Griffins made the comeback complete.

Hoevelmann led off with a single. After stealing second and advancing to third on a WashU error, he was able to score on Dobbs' sacrifice-fly. Tyler Heitmann came on in the ninth and secured his first save on the year.
