Millsaps Pitching Keeps Griffins Bats Quiet On Sunday

JACKSON, Miss.—The Fontbonne University baseball team struggled to get its offense going against Millsaps on Sunday afternoon as the Griffins fell, 10-0 (8 innings).

The Griffins (1-2), bats were held in check against the Majors trio of pitchers in Daniel Adams, Langston Haden and Walker Castle. The hurlers allowed just seven hits and struck out four. Adams picked up the win after going 5.0 innings, allowing six hits and striking out three.

Offensively for Fontbonne, Jackson Penrod paced the way going 3-for-4, while Michael Golich, Ryan Schocker, Matt Tossick and Jonathan Hoevelmann added the other hits. On the bump, starter Levi Earnest was dealt the loss after going 4.2 innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on three hits and sitting down two Majors hitters.

Millsaps (4-2), meanwhile, got three of its 13 hits off the bat of Jimmy Johnstone, who went 3-for-4 overall with a run scored. Jackson Hailey and Brennan Ducote each had a hit and totaled a team-high two RBI apiece.

It was a pitchers dual early up until the home half of the fifth when the Majors finally broke through. Chase Callaway got things started with a triple to center. After a walk, Jackson Hailey hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Callaway to make it 1-0.

Later in the inning, Wes Lassere, who walked earlier in the inning, scored on a Griffins error to push the advantage out to 2-0. Ducote followed with a two RBI double to right field and that extended the lead to 4-0.

From there, the Majors plated one in the sixth, one in the seventh and four more in the eighth to go on for the 10-run victory.

The Griffins look to bounce back in front of the home crowd this weekend. The team will play Chicago on Friday at 3 p.m., followed by a 2 p.m., contest against Dominican on Sunday.
