Softball players take home plenty of post-season awards
May 5, 2012 -Fresh off a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) regular season championship and a SLIAC Tournament championship, several members of the Fontbonne University women's softball team have taken home post-season conference accolades.
Fontbonne junior pitcher Kourtney VonBehren was named 2012 SLIAC Pitcher of the Year as well as named to the SLIAC All-Tournament Team. VonBehren posted a 7-0 record with a 1.17 earned run average in seven appearances in conference play, leading the SLIAC in both wins and ERA. She held opponents to a .193 batting average to rank fourth in the conference and struck out 41 batters in 42 innings, which ranked fifth.
Fontbonne freshman third baseman Danni Glixman earned SLIAC Newcomer of the Year honors. Glixman ranked in the top five of each major offensive category, leading all SLIAC players in hits (24), RBI (22), slugging percentage (1.000) and total bases (46), while finishing second in batting average (.522), on-base percentage (.549), doubles (7) and triples (3).
Other First-Team All-Conference selections were sophomore Sarah Cerutti and freshman Cassi Glixman and Shannon Fitzpatrick.
Sophomore Rachel McCarthy and senior Sam Rosner were both named to the SLIAC All-Tournament Team as well as Second-Team All-Conference. Senior Alyssa Akers and sophomore Marissa Simon were named to the Honorable Mention All-Conference Team.
Sophomore Cara Hargate was named the SLIAC Tournament MVP after going 2-4 in the tournament championship game with four RBI's. Hargate's two-run walk-off single led the Griffins to their third straight SLIAC Tournament championship.
Fontbonne University's Bill Rosner was named the 2012 SLIAC Softball Coach of the Year. Rosner led the Griffins to a conference record 28 wins over the past two seasons, including a 13-1 mark this season, the first back-to-back outright conference championship since 2001-2002. This marks Rosner's first Coach of the Year honor in his fourth season at the helm of Fontbonne's softball program.
Fontbonne's Jessica Pratt was named to the SLIAC All-Sportsmanship team. The Griffins (27-10) will learn their next opponent on Monday when the NCAA announces its tournament field.
