St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne University basketball has long been participants of the National Basketball Coaches Association's (NABC) annual Coaches vs. Cancer event. Founding Athletic Director, the late Dr. Lee McKinney, jumped on board with the University of Missouri's head coach Norm Stewart, who began the event. McKinney joined with Stewart to bring the event to St. Louis.
This year the Griffins will host the event on Wednesday, Feb. 1st when Greenville College comes to Lee McKinney Court. Coaches vs. Cancer, Suits and Sneakers week, is actually Jan. 23-29, but as the Griffins don't have a home game that week, they've chosen the next available home date.
Men's basketball assistant coach Sumner Ahearn gathered some basketball players to create a series of promotional videos entitled "Griffins Believe". Several videos will be uploaded daily leading up to the event. These videos will be uploaded to https://twitter.com/fbubasketball. The Griffins have plenty of ways to donate and bring awareness to the American Cancer Society before and during the event as detailed below:
- Wall of Hope: Sign your pledge in the fight against cancer and/or acknowledge those battling the horrific disease with or without a donation. Student-athletes will be in the top stairwell of the DSAC on Thursday, Jan. 26th and Monday the 30th from 11:30-1:30. Griffin Gang will also have them available during the games on Wednesday.
- T-shirt sales: The Griffins are selling a limited number of pink t-shirts seen here for $15 at the games, beginning at 6 p.m. during the women's game.
- Raffle bucket: In lieu of a 50/50 raffle, Fontbonne players will raffle off a bucket with gift certificates and a one-night stay at the Chase Park Plaza in Clayton, Mo.
All proceeds from the event will be donated to the American Cancer Society.
