Elizabeth started a program at Fontbonne to teach handicapped children how to swim. While serving as a part-time swimming instructor she began classes that worked with crippled, blind, deaf and developmentally disabled children. Her leadership led her to a full-time faculty position and she subsequently became chair of the Physical Education Department.
After 14 years at Fontbonne she accepted the position of recreation and camping director for the St. Louis Association for Retarded Citizens. One of her priorities was to renovate camping facilities to make them handicapped accessible. Through her efforts and the programs she designed, thousands of children across the metropolitan area have a greater sense of dignity and have been able to enjoy activities that many other children take for granted.
