2002 Inductees
Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Boll Meyer (Women's Basketball/Field Hockey)
Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Boll Meyer is a 1943 graduate of
Fontbonne University
with a major in physical education and a minor in dramatics. Betty
was a varsity
basketball player from 1940 until 1943, and participated in
varsity field hockey
during those same four years. She was crowned Penny Circus queen,
an activity
sponsored by the Fontbonne Athletic Association.
Besides lettering in two different sports for four years, she
was involved in many
campus activities. She received the Alumni Hood Award at
Commencement for
"loyalty, leadership and service." She served as class
vice-president in 1941 and
president in 1942. She was the Student Association vice-president
in 1943 and
the Sodality vice-prefect in 1942. Her classmates termed her "an
all-around
Fontbonne girl" as she also appeared in the plays performed on
campus.
After graduation, Betty taught physical education. In 1950, she
married her
husband, William. After beginning their family in St. Louis, the
Meyers moved to
California.
Angela Renee Eiler Walsh (Cheerleading)
Angela "Angie" Eiler Walsh is a 1995 graduate of Fontbonne University with a major in Communications and Public Relations. When Angie began school at Fontbonne in 1991, the athletic program here was just beginning to emerge. Avidly interested in supporting her school, Angie approached Lee McKinney, the Athletic Director, with the proposal to begin a cheerleading squad.
It was a modest beginning, with only three members. Those first three young women paved the way for the teams that followed. Angie acted as captain or co-captain all four years. During her college years, Angie was the recipient of a 1994 Flying Griffin Award and the 1995 Campus Leadership Award. Angie used the experience gained and the enthusiasm she always displayed for her school to become a member of the St. Louis Rams Cheerleaders in 1995. She became the captain of that squad in 1996. During the 1995 through 2000 baseball seasons, Angie was a Team Fredbird Cheer Group member.
Royland Woods
(Men's Basketball)
Royland Woods is a 1996 graduate of
Fontbonne University with a major in Human Services. As a member of
the Griffin basketball team, Royland was a two time St. Louis
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference first team selection. His
senior year, Royland was Co-Player of the Year,
averaging 18.8 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. He holds the
school record for blocks in a game with 15 and blocks in a
season with 117. He was the force behind Fontbonne's school record
23-5 season in 1994. He helped lead Fontbonne to the SLIAC
Tournament Championship in 1994. Royland led Fontbonne to SLIAC
Championships in both years he played for the Griffins with a 13-1
record his first year and 14-0 his second year.
During his senior year, Royland led his team to a 19-6 overall record. Royland was named to the DIII News Honorable Mention All-American Team. Royland was inducted to the SLIAC Hall of Fame in 2007. He received the 1995 Albert Red Schoendienst Male Athlete of the Year Award at Fontbonne. He is married with one son. Royland transferred to Fontbonne from the University of Wisconsin-Milkwaukee.
