1999 Inductees
Rosemarie Archangel (Physical Education 1952)
As a student at Fontbonne, Rosemarie participated in all sports and served as president of the Fonthonne Athletic Association. She received her degree in physical education and went on to be awarded her master's and doctorate in physical education from the State University of Iowa at Iowa City.
Rosemarie joined the faculty at Fontbonne in the fall of 1955 and subsequently became chair of the Physical Education Department. She joined the faculty at SIU Edwardsville in 1961 and retired June 30, 1993. She had served as dean of the SlUE Graduate School since 1988. She was also professor of Health, Recreation and Physical Education and was named to emerita status at the time of her retirement.
Meneve Dunham (Distinguished Service Award)
During her tenure as President of Fontbonne College, Meneve focused on strengthening the athletic program. Her first step was to hire an athletic director and begin the process of creating a modem program to attract student-athletes to campus. As the driving force behind the fundraising and construction of the Student Activity Center which bears her name, she was instrumental in securing major funding for this building.
The building is still the Student Activity Center and is the location for all athletic department offices as well as the site for men's and women's basketball and men's and women's volleyball games.
Elizabeth Lucas Gilbert (Women's Basketball, Field Hockey, Equestrian 1945)
Elizabeth started a program at Fontbonne to teach handicapped children how to swim. While serving as a part-time swimming instructor she began classes that worked with crippled, blind, deaf and developmentally disabled children. Her leadership led her to a full-time faculty position and she subsequently became chair of the Physical Education Department.
After 14 years at Fontbonne she accepted the position of recreation and camping director for the St. Louis Association for Retarded Citizens. One of her priorities was to renovate camping facilities to make them handicapped accessible. Through her efforts and the programs she designed, thousands of children across the metropolitan area have a greater sense of dignity and have been able to enjoy activities that many other children take for granted.
Jane Mitchellette "Mitch" Hanneken (Women's Basketball, Volleyball and Equestrian)
As a student, "Mitch" played basketball, volleyball and rode equestrian. Her riding skills earned her several championships at Fontbonne. She went on to receive her master's in physical education from the University of Colorado/Boulder. After graduation she became interested in tennis and became the first female board memher of the Triple A Golf and Tennis Club, and the first female linesman in the United States.
In addition to her athletic skills, she focused on teaching and founded the St. Louis Hills Leaming Center to serve children and adults with learning disabilities and behavioral disorders. She also founded Camp Happy Days, a summer program held at St. Gabriel's School. Mitch has continued to serve the College through her volunteer efforts and as a member of the Alumni Board.
Kim Kutis-Hantak (Women's Basketball and Volleyball 1992)
As a student at Fontbonne, Kim participated in basketball, volleyball and golf. She earned All-District honors in basketball and volleyball. She helped lead the volleyball team to consecutive league titles in 1990, 1991 and 1992. Additionally, she was selected as an All-District player in basketball and holds the record for assists in one season with an average of 4.6 assists per game.
After graduation she joined Fontbonne as assistant women's basketball coach and helped lead the team to two conference titles. She also became head women's volleyball coach and holds the school record for most women's volleyball coaching victories. She is currently employed by Kutis Funeral Homes Inc.
Darrell Haynes (Men's Basketball 1992)
Darrell played basketball at Fontbonne for four years.
During his college career he amassed five school records
that include most career free throws made (187), most
career rebounds (924), most points scored in a season as a
freshman (458), most field goals made in a season (192),
and most rebounds in a season (304).
Some of those records have since been broken. Since graduation he has married another Fontbonne alum and is now employed by KSDK-TV.
Dean "Dino" McKinney (Men's Basketball and Golf 1991)
During his four years at Fontbonne, "Dino" set four career records and three individual season records. They include most career games played (119), most career points (1,689),
most career field goals (475), most career 3-point goals (403); most points in a season (553); most 3-point field goals in a season (141), and most consecutive free throws made (27). Some of these records have since been broken.
Dino was selected as an All-District player for two years and was chosen All-District in golf for one year. After graduation he served as assistant basketball coach for two seasons and helped lead the Griffins to a conference championship in 1991-92. Dino married a Fontbonne alum, Theresa Chlipala '93, and is currently a high school teacher and golf coach in St. Clair, Mo.
Rosemary Ward Wellington (Equestrian, Basketball, Field Hockey 1942)
Prior to her graduation, Rosemary was voted the outstanding athlete in the 18-year history of Fontbonne College. Having won her numeral in her freshman year, her letter in her sophomore year and her sweater in her junior year, Rosemary won every athletic award Fontbonne offered. By graduation she had served as President of the Athletic Association, captain of the hockey team and won numerous cups and ribbons in horse shows. She competed all four years on the hockey and basketball teams.
After graduation she became Athletic Director at St. Joseph's Academy where she built their athletic program. In 1988 the Academy initiated the Outstanding Woman Athlete Award which is given every year in Rosemary's honor.
