St. Louis- Fontbonne University women's lacrosse dropped their season opener this afternoon 16-1 against NCAA Division II McKendree University.
The first goal of the game finally found its way onto the scoreboard with 22:29 remaining in the first half.
With a minute to go before halftime, McKendree led 4-0. A Fontbonne failed clear attempt quickly allowed McKendree to score a fifth goal. That fast turn-around muffled Fontbonne's mindset and McKendree would end up scoring 3 goals within that minute, leaving the Griffins trailing 7-0 at the half.
Fontbonne was finally able to find the back of the net on a fast break opportunity that ended with freshman Paige Pfankuch scoring her first collegiate goal. Pfankuch had a beautiful left-handed shot, stick side high between McKendree's Kelly Eastman's stick and helmet.
The Griffins almost landed another shot in the back of the net but was 2 seconds too late as the final buzzer sounded as the ball was in the air.
Fontbonne will get ready as they next host Dubuque College on Saturday March 9th at 3pm at Gay field.
